The continuing mess in the Lehigh Parkway (Sigh…) The dumbest thing I ‘ve seen in awhile…

On March 20th of last year I lamented the ridiculously poor circumstances that a natural spring in the Lehigh Parkway was left in.  I took the following four pictures on March 19th 2010:

The following quote was from that blog post last March: “This entire area of the Parkway should be wetlands, not open space. A perfectly healthy tree fell here a few days back for no reason other than poor soil conditions. The closer I looked at the Parkway, the more ridiculous the state of the ecosystem began to appear.”

A few days ago I received a tip from fellow blogger Mike Molovinsky that he received from a reader.  Supposedly, the area in the photographs above had been repaired.  Yesterday I made my way down to the site and not only had the spring not been “repaired” but the corrective action that has been taken is completely, utterly ludicrous. The only difference between this year and last year is the fact that the open spring has been filled in with what appears to be brick and stone filled waste soil.  This is not a corrective action and as a matter of fact, there is no corrective action here folks besides restoration of the spring! Take a look at it yourself, note the running water coming from increasingly depressed soil as the spring reasserts itself.  Look at the waste soil.  Look at this madness of park management that I have no idea how for one second, someone thought was a good idea. (Most of the pictured water is running and from the stream – not leftover flood water)

The path, like last year and years before was again part of the running spring water.

I almost can’t believe this but then again, I really shouldn’t be surprised at all should I? I mean, you have been reading my blog haven’t you?  More about this and other terrible Parkway conditions this week as I don’t want to make one giant, long, and depressing post.  Sigh.

andrew, thank you for covering this topic. although you have issues with the treatment environmentally, i would like to point out that the reader who called me was pleased with the visual improvement.
